Cat Age in Human Years Calculator

Cat's Age in Years or Months

Indicate if age is in months or years

(Optional)

Entry Fields

In the Cat's Age field, enter the age, in years or months, of the cat for whom you are calculating. This is the cat's chronological age (i.e. cat age since birth); If you've adopted, check with your veterinarian, who has several ways of approximating feline age, including the simplest method of examining teeth.

In the Age is In field, select Years (the default) or Months. If selecting Months, enter age from 1 to 18 months; or, for Years, enter age from 1 to 38 years.

The maximum cat age is 38 years old, in honor of Creme Puff, the oldest recorded cat. On average, cats live between about 12 to 18 years old, with many cats living into their 20s.

About Cat to Human Age Calculator

Cats certainly grow up quickly! A cat's most rapid aging is from birth until 2 years of age, chronologically, which is equivalent of 24 human years old. Thereafter, each additional cat year is equal to 4 human years.

Why convert cat age to human years?

We know, of course, that cats live significantly shorter lives than we humans. So knowing a cat's approximate age in human years is always of interest, particularly to cat owners and anyone who adores cats.

Our Cat Age Calculator shows no only how old a cat's age is when converted to human age, but also the cat's life stage, which is interesting particularly when compared to a person's life stage.

For instance, a 6 month old cat is about age 10 in human years. At 3 years old, the cat is 28 years old. Contrast that to a child who is 3 years old, with 25 more years to go until age 28!

Why is a Cat's Life Stage Important?

The life stages used on this calculator are based on the AAHA/AAFP 2021 Guidelines, and are important in feline veterinarian healthcare, cat nutrition, as well as behavioral interactions.

A cat's 5 life stages, based on a cat's chronological age, are:

  • Kitten (up to 1 year old)
  • Young Adult Cat (1 to 6 years old)
  • Mature Adult Cat (7 to 10 years old
  • Senior Cat (10 years or older)
  • End of Life (regardless of age)

Note that this classification supersedes a guideline comprised of 6 life stages previously used by AAFP: Kitten, Junior, Prime, Mature, Senior, Geriatric.
