Formulas: The conversion factor when Total Cholesterol (TC), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) are converted to and from mg/dl and mmol/L and is 38.61. When converting to mg/dl, the value (TC, HDL, LDL) is multiplied by 38.61. When converting to mmol/L, the value is divided by 38.61. The conversion factor used when Triglyceride (TG) is converted to and from mmol/L and mg/dl is 88.5. When converting to mg/dl, TG is multiplied by 88.5. When converting to mmol/L, TG is divided by 88.5.

A lipid panel is a blood test evaluating Cholesterol and Triglycerides (another fat) in the bloodstream. A certain amount of cholesterol/fat is vital, but too much can cause arterial damage resulting in heart disease or stroke.

The lipid panel most often reports on Total Cholesterol (TC), HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides (TG). Depending on where your test is administered, the results will either be in mg/dl (milligrams per decilitre) or mmol/L (millimoles per litre). For example, the United States, uses mg/dl and the United Kingdom uses mmol/L.
