About A1C and Converting to Estimated Average Glucose

A1C is a blood test which measures average blood glucose levels over a period of approximately the past 3 months, providing a broader view of sugar levels than a test at a given point in time, such as after fasting, or before/after a meal.

A1C is helpful for doctors to diagnose Prediabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and is also used see how well one's treatment plan is working.

A1C is reported as a percentage, which is different from the results of home meters used to monitor blood glucose levels and blood glucose tests, which report in milligrams per decilitre (mg/dl) or millimoles per litre (mmol/L).

Converting A1C to eAG (estimated average glucose) facilitates understanding A1C, since eAG is in the more familiar mg/dl or mmol/L metric. Researchers developed a formula that converts A1C to eAG; that formula, shown below, is used by this calculator:

eAG = 28.7 * A1C - 46.7

A1C Ranges: Normal, Prediabetes, Diabetes

Lower A1C numbers means less sugar is attached to hemoglobin; Higher A1C indicates a higher percentage of sugar is adhering to hemoglobin. The following A1C chart, from the CDC, shows A1C ranges and corresponding interpretation.

A1C Range
Normal below 5.7%
Prediabetes 5.7% to 6.4%
Prediabetes 6.5% or above
