If you're an apple, you're carrying more weight in your mid-section, also referred to as central obesity, whereas if you're a pear, more weight is concentrated on your hips and buttocks, known as as Gluteofemoral fat.
Why is Mid-Section/Visceral Fat More Harmful?
Research indicates that if you're overweight or obese, location of fat matters, with abdominal fat (i.e. around the middle as on an apple) being more detrimental because this type of fat, called visceral fat, is deeper within the abdomen, situated close to the vital organs, including the liver, stomach, and heart.
Fat around the middle can cause a myriad of health problems, from heart disease and stroke, to diabetes and even some cancers.
