Entry Fields

In the Monthly Social Security Amount field, enter the amount received each month from social security in the current year.

If Medicare Part B is automatically deducted from your social security payment, which is the case for most recipients, you have the choice whether or not to include that amount in this field. Whichever way you decide, keep in mind that the calculated monthly amount is an estimate and not exact until Part B for the next year is announced. You will then need to manually adjust the increased monthly value by either subtracting out next year's Part B (Option 1), or subtracting out just the increased dollar amount of Part B (Option 2)

  • Option 1 - Including part B in your current monthly amount will generate a more accurate value of what you will receive monthly next year based on cola's rate change. However, once next year's Medicare Part B is released, you will need to subtract it from the calculated value to see the monthly benefit amount.

  • Option 2 - Excluding part B from your current monthly amount - that is, entering the amount currently deposited into your account monthly. The calculated increase will be slightly higher than you will actually receive in monthly benefit next year. This is because the calculation does not subtract out the monthly increase for part B next year.

In the COLA Rate field, enter the actual cost of living adjustment rate once released, or the projected COLA rate until available or to what-if calculate.

COLA is entered as a percentage, so if COLA Rate is 3.6%, enter 3.6 as the value. Until the official cost of living adjustment rate release, you can calculate how much your monthly benefit would increase by entering different values. For instance, how much more would you get monthly in social security if the rate is 3.5% or 3.7%.

Optionally, enter Person's Name if you are calculating COLA for someone other than yourself, such as for your partner.
